I WaS LeFt BeHiND…& SHe NeVeR LooKed BaCk

Gabby’s PSA on horse slaughter was overwhelmingly emotional. She used her research to create a story from the horse’s Point of View (POV). Please review the PSA below and let us know what you think.

Did Gabby’s PSA persuade you to take action?

What made this PSA effective?

What emotion did Gabby want the audience to feel?

Gabby’s selected ‘Wild Horse’s by Natasha Bedingfield.  I inserted the youtube video with the song.  Let us know if it doesn’t play.

  1. Hey ms. D, i just saw a Simpsions when the whole family was looking for Bart and they went to machu picchu. when they were there marge had a dream about a chief of the machu picchu empire about the children growing up and then not being strong enough to fight the conquistadors. That was a pop culture connection about the aztec and incan empires.

  2. Hi Alyssa,
Great idea! 🙂 I look forward to seeing your PSA and learning about leukemia through Eva’s story.

  3. Ms D,
Thank you, I found a lot of great and emotional pictures on this website. The pictures are about a girl named Eva who was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 4 years old. I’m going to tell her story in my psa to show what she went through when she was diagnosed.

  4. Hi Dino,
All of the images relate to your topic. The Leukemia Lymphoma Society is a non-profit devoted specifically to your cause. See my comment to Alyssa for further explanation.

  5. Hi CJ, After you receive feedback on the storyboard, integrate the feedback, revise where necessary, and then begin.

  6. Hi Alyssa,
What type of images are you looking for? The Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s site on the right side bar has outstanding images of survivors and others who donate their time to this special cause. Google image searches are not as reliable as the sites we pre-screen. Try the site again and click on the links the site provides. Images of resilience are powerful and will appeal to the audience especially since the photos are real people & real survivors.

  7. Please disregard my last comment as I have found I do have enough images with the pictures from the family photo album

  8. Ms.DiGangi,
On the website, I found pictures but none that applied to Hodgkin’s. I have been on the website for a little over an hour now and have navigated like you told me to. Could I please have a point in the right direction because I am beginning to panic?

  9. Hi Ms. D,
You gave me back my storyboard today for my psa and said that my pictures needed more emotional appeal. I agree I didn’t like my pictures and the website from the social studies resources didn’t have any other pictures i wanted to use. My topic is leukemia and I wanted to know if I should get other pictures and resubmit it to you. Is there any other websites I should use to find pictures? Or should I use a google search?

  10. Is there anything else like the story board we have to do before we start the PSA.

  11. Hi Dino,
How long did you spend navigating the site? There are multiple images that would be applicable for your PSA.

  12. Mrs DiGangi,
I checked out the lymmphoma website you told me about in class eariler, but there aren’t any pictures on it. What should I do?

  13. Hi Drew,
That episode sounds hysterical. 😀 Did you post this on the Math blog? Mr. Z would enjoy the connection.

    Hi Sam,
Thank you for sharing. 🙂 You have a lot of great ideas using real victims of drunk driving on your storyboard. Let’s talk about it tomorrow.

  14. The Pay it Forward Activity we did reminds me of an episode of Family Guy. He was trying to spread the word about a play and said “I’ll tell two people and each of them will tell two people and thats like ten people right there!” His math is obviously wrong but it has the same exponential growth concept.

  15. Ms. DiGangi,
Sorry for the double post on my Drunk Driving video. can you please erase the video that was posted on the one where it says “I was left behind and she never looked back”. thank you so much.

    Sam Leitner

  16. Chris,
OK. You may really like the komen.org site. They have great stories and photos of survivors.

  17. Ms. Digangi, I cancer.gov and cancer.org for most of my pictures and I made sure they were reliable.

  18. Keenan,
You only need 5 images. But Powerpoint does not give a 5 slides per page handout option. Therefore, you may put 2 images on 1 slide or 1 image per slide.

    Bianca,
Yes. But check for website reliability.

    Chris,
What direction will you be taking for your PSA. Some of the most powerful PSAs from students and by the Komen or Avon foundation usually use positive photos and stories about survivors. I will add Komen to our links. What sources did you use for your research?

    Jake,
Thank you for your comment! I agree! 🙁

    Jessica,
Yes. But check for website reliability.

    Leah,
Yes. But check for website reliability.

    Dan,
Match it to the “words.” Refer to the KFC Cruelty model we did in class for help.

    Allie,
    Unicef.org
    http://www.one.org/us/issues/
Project peanut butter has outstanding photos of before and after shots. Look through the website.

    Dino,
Try the “Cancer: Leukemia Lymphoma” link. You may conduct a google image search but check for website reliability.

    Marissa,
    You are welcome! 😀

  19. Ms. D,
I am completing my PSA story board and I am confused on your directions you gave me. I do not know how many pictures I need and what to write in the boxes.

On the directions sheet it says that I should have 4-6 pictures per page, but don’t I need 5 total? I also wrote out the web address for each picture but do I need to write why I chose them also?
    Thank you

  20. Ms. Digangi, my topic breast cancer. I used the American Cancer Society link on the side bar. Once I’m on the website, how do i find pictures? All I find is articles. Thank you.

  21. Ms. D,
This PSA was very effective on people in class it almost made me cry. It was very upsetting how the girl droped the hourse off and never looked back.

  22. My PSA is on Child Abuse. I’m looking for some pictures for the “Images” colum, but the sites only have all good pictures. For an example, I need a image that shows a child with bruises. Those pictures show organizations that has healthy childrens pictures.

  23. Hi Ms. D, my topic is child abuse and when i looked on the sidebar and clicked on the websites i couldn’t find any pictures that would fit my PSA appropriately. Are we allowed to use Google at all to find any pictures?

  24. Hi Ms.D
I am finishing up my images column and I was checking the directions and I was wondering if my topic is not on your blog and I use google images, should I just write the url address for each pic under them? thanks!

  25. hey ms d. what kind of pictures are we supposed to find for take action and for more information

  26. Dear Mrs. D,

I’m having trouble finding pictures on the blog here.I don’t really know where to find them. I looked under ss resources and only found peanut butter malnutrition….my topic is world Hunger. i know that has to do with what my topic is, but the site doesn’t have good enough pics for me. I need different ones. can you tell me where to find them? Thanks.

  27. Sammie, Do you want to tell Alex’s story? If yes, do any of your facts from your research fit? Remember, your facts can be inferred through the images.

  28. Dani, I didn’t get your request yet. Did you type in bkind2animals.wikispaces.com?
If you aren’t accepted soon send another request to join or email it to yourself or a friend.

UPDATE: Dani, you are now a member of the wiki. 😀

Hey 8Y, I will be unavailable for several hours so, please help each other and respond to other students’ questions. I will be able to approve wiki memberships between 8 pm and 10 pm..so, don’t procrastinate 🙁 because I will not approve memberships after 10 pm.

  29. ms d,
yes I did and also my printer isnt working so i sent a request in the wiki what do I have to do next?

  30. Dani,
Which sites did you try? ASPCA? HSUS? PETAKIDS? Oogy? Sarge the elderbull?

    Sammie,
Are you going to tell the story of a survivor? That may help you in your search. Google searches for cancer will be extensive…Try http://www.alexslemonade.org/about/meet-alex

Also try askkids.com – it’s a kid friendly search engine.

  31. Ms DiGangi i went on the right sidebar and their wasn’t any pictures of dog fighting. Am i allowed to go on google and copy pictures from there? Then use those sites as the URL

  32. Dante,
Yes. Don’t forget to print the images.

    Phil,
Yes. Please see my response to Mel on Child Abuse.

  33. Ms D,
Thanks I will check them out. I also want to clarify something. All we need to do for the images is to get an image for each section under the image column and put one on each slide and put the url on the bottom, right? And we explain the images on the yellow paper right?

  34. Dante, Did you try any of the links under “News Sources?” – especially CNN? Also try the United Nations. The HBO documentary is called, “The Greatest Silence.”

  35. Dan,
    Try unicef.org
    data.org

    Emily,
Do google image search but check for website reliability.

    Marissa,
Google isn’t a source. Yes, use the resources on the right sidebar. Try “Cybersafety,” stopbullyingnow.gov & “Bullying in Schools”

    Himani,
1 image per slide. The url is the web address.

    Marisa Apd,
Oops. I will make a new page on the wiki. Upload it to the RAFT for now.

    Mel,

Yes, you may go an image search. Check for webs site reliability.

  36. Ms. D,

I looked on the right side bar for images for my topic, but the only website that talks about the congo is amnesty international, but they don’t have any pictures.

  37. Hey ms d, what social studies resources can I use to find pictures for starvation in Africa for my psa

  38. Hi Mrs. DiGangi,

One of my favorite Older movies….I’m not a big 1990’s fan of old movies, but My favorite would have to be ” A Bronx Tale”. It stars Robert Di Niro and Joe Something. It starts with a p, but it don’t know how to spell it, anyways I wanted to make a connection from the Children See, Children Do video. In this movie, the little boy named C (for short) copies exactly what his dad does. C’s dad was driving a bus and as he passed a church, he prayed quickly, and right after, C did the same. Also, earlier in the movie a mob of Italian gang people were talking and using their hands like the Italians did. (If i could, i would show you.) C copied the Italian man’s actions.

  39. Rachel, Did you use the links under “Social Studies Resources” on the right side bar. Use ASPCA & HSUS. Refer to the IMAGES directions (step 1, step 2, etc). 5 images with the url for each are due Friday.

  40. Hi Marissa,

We checked the “Words” column of the PSA storyboard. We watched and analyzed 2 PSAs focusing on Emotional Appeal using Images and Words to persuade the audience to take action. You can watch the PSAs on our blog. The “Images” portion of the PSA is due Friday.

  41. Hi Ms. D, what did i miss today in social studies? I wanna do it tonight for homework so that i’m not too much behind in class.
