This is PART 1 of our Culminating Project. The Enlightenment foldable is due at the end of the period on Tuesday (Ms. D note – extended until after Thanksgiving). Most of the work will be completed in class. If you need extra time you may finish the project at home. This project will assess your understanding and application of main ideas from our Civics unit to current events. Please remember that each question/prompt on the foldable MUST BE SUPPORTED BY RESEARCH. Record the source for each flap. Take pride in your work, use complete sentences, and do your best.

  1. The topic I chose for the service learning project is dolphin slaughter in Japan. Every year over 20,000 dolphins off the coast of Japan are killed. Their meat contains mercury and is sold and not labeled as hazardous, and sometimes labeled as whale meat. To those of you who read this post and care, please go on the website shown below and sign the petition to end dolphin slaughter in Japan.

  2. Hi Kaitlyn, A song works well. What song did you pick? Also, every answer is BASED ON RESEARCH. A prediction must be supported by the research. The natural rights must be based on your research.

  3. Hi Sarah, Who is the founder of your organization? Did you do a google search? When did Greyhound rescue start? Who advocates for greyhounds?

  4. Hi Alex, I am happy to hear that you understand the directions and how to apply the information. You were absent so you may have until Monday to complete the assignment. 3-5 sentences and provide evidence/support from the research. Do you remember the definitions for each natural right? How do you think the dog’s or people’s natural rights would be affected if nothing were done to stop dog fighting? I can’t give you the answer but can guide you to think about it from the dog’s point of view.

  5. Hi Alysia, Yes. Everything from class is on the blog. Do you remember how to search for stuff on the blog? You can use the “search bar,” archives, or categories. Also, the blog is in reverse chronological order and you can scroll through until you see the packet. Go through it slowly.

  6. Hi Ms. DiGangi
Is the Natural Rights Philosophy Packet on the blog? If so, where? I can’t find it anywhere, please help.

  7. hey ms. d,

i have a quick question about the foldable, i was absent the day you assigned us this project and i understand everything mostly but i was going to ask you how much information (research) we needed for each flap. also, for the life, liberty and property flap, how many sentences should we have? i only have one for each, but i dont know what to put for them. my topic is dog fighting and i dont really know what to put for the liberty and property. could you please help me?

  8. Hi Ms. D
I’m having trouble finding a model of civic virtue for my topic. Could you give me some ideas. My topic is greyhound cruelty.

  9. Hi Mrs.D on the foldable for the state of nature flap and the natural right flap is it our opinion on what we think would happen to their rights also in the direction sheet you said for the state of nature its our prediction so should i say my opinion about child abuse?

  10. thank you mrs digangi that helped (: i will make sure i update my response. I appreciate your help. thanks again

  11. Hi Alysia, Refer back to your John Locke notes and it will be easier to understand. Did you review the slideshow? For example, if nothing were to change in our society how would life be affected by drug abuse…how would liberty be affected by drug abuse….

  12. i said local food banks, students and shelters/government and i have support for that so will that be ok?

  13. Hi Danielle,
Use the links from the blog and/or the 2 documentaries I mentioned in class. The links are pre-screened for student use.

  14. Hi Ms. DiGangi
I’m almost done my foldable, and I am having a really difficult time with the Natural Rights flap. My topic is Drug Abuse, I don’t really understand what I would write for Life, Liberty, and Property.

  15. hey mrs digangi,
For homelessness the three people or steps you could take to help fix the issue, i had a question about that. Could i do students as one and the government to help advertise so people can donate? Then, i just need one final one any suggestions? ( for enlightenment flap)

  16. Hi Danielle, You will have the whole period. Is your foldable based on research? Did you record the sources? If yes, you can wait until tomorrow to complete Jane Addams. Did you find a pop culture connection?

  17. Hi Taylor, Think about flipping it…are dogs property where people can exploit them for monetary gain? According to John Locke, what is the definition of property? Is it just owning things?

  18. Ms D.,
I just watched the “It’s Time For Enlightenment Slideshow.” That helped me figure out what to do thanks. I still don’t know of what to put in the “Property” part of the foldable for Dog Fighting. Have any ideas?
    Thanks.

  19. thanks, all i have left to do is the rest of the flap on Jane Adamms. Do we have the whole period tomorrow or just partial time? So should i just wait until tomorrow to do the rest of that portion?

  20. Hi Taylor, Did you watch the, “It’s Time for Enlightenment slideshow?” That explains the directions. Each flap has a specific prompt or question. Watch the slideshow and read the post.

  21. Hi Danielle, I have an article on Jane Addams that you can use tomorrow. You will have the whole period to finish. Make sure your other flaps are completed.

  22. Hi Kayla, Respond to the State of Nature flap based on the research. What are your facts? Why should people care/want to make changes? Refer back to your state of nature notes. What happens to kids that feel alone, suffer from depression, are bullied? The research explains the consequences. Make a prediction based on the research.

  23. Hi Zhane, Create a foldable. Did you watch the, “It’s Time for Enlightenment” slideshow? The foldable directions are in the slideshow.

  24. Hi Emma, The 3 steps and people involved are the “movement.” You may list them as long as you use complete sentences. You need a specific hero. Who started MADD?

  25. Hi Anthony, The Pop Culture connection requires a connection to drunk driving not texting while driving. Think about movies, books, TV shows, etc…

  26. Hi Brianna,
Thanks for checking in…yes, you may write it on looseleaf and transfer the info to the final draft of the foldable. Remember to use the links from the sidebar to respond to the questions. You may conduct a google search for your hero and pop culture connection. See you tomorrow.

  27. Hey Mrs.D,
I was not in school today. Well i am trying to see what the homework is and i am having trouble. I asked Alysia from our class what it is and she said we have to finish the foldable. I left the foldable and the rest of my reserch at school. I was wondering, if its okay that i write the information on a loose leaf paper. Then, tomorrow i can write the information i got and put it on the foldable.

  28. Ms D,
I can’t seem to find anyone famous who raises awareness about teen suicide. Do you have any ideas? Or at least another link saying where I could find one would be great help!
    Thanks,
    Katie

  29. hi ms. d, I’m doing drunk driving for my project. Could i relate to the PSA we watched in class about texting and driving and relate to drunk driving by both acts put people in harms way.

  30. Hi Mrs. Digangi,
For our foldable, i do not understand the movement section underneath the enlightenment part. I don’t understand the part about who would be involved. Also, can we list the 3 ways that can be taken to reverse harmful damages? one last question, does the hero have to have a name? In the article she was just known as a mother of somebody killed in a drunk driving accident.

  31. Hi Ms DiGangi. I have a question about the project foldable. On the green piece of paper, what do we do?

  32. Hi Ms. DiGangi,
I am doing teen suicide for the project, and I am confused on what to do for the state of nature flap on the fold-able. If no rules or laws are implemented how does it change teen suicide. So what am I supposed to write for that flap.

  33. hi mrs.d,
Quick question, for the hero for the pop culture connection, it asked what obstacles/risks were taken. But, its very difficult for me because for homelessness i found a girl named Jane Addams and she really didn’t take any risks. She just took it upon herself while she was visiting europe to help. Then, she on a prize but in the article i’m reading i can’t find any obstacles she had to face, i don’t know what to do!

  34. Ms.D,
I’m working on my foldable but I’m really confused. I can’t think of what the property would be for the topic of Dog Fighting. I also don’t understand what I need to look up for the “Heros and pop culture connection flap.”

  35. Hi Haley, Great! For the pop culture and hero flap students may conduct a google search or use the books/handouts of heroes that I have in class.

  36. Hi Mrs. D!
I figured out my last question! I went onto a link that I guess I hadn’t checked yet.

  37. Mrs. D,
For the foldable, does all of the information have to come from your links? I am having a hard time finding a model of civic virtue for the China Fur Trade.

  38. Hi Danielle, You are welcome. I posted 2 links for homelessness before you left class – on the right side bar. You can also use the links under NEWS SOURCES on the right side bar and SEARCH for HOMELESSNESS IN US. As I mentioned on Friday, there were 2 MTV documentaries about Homelessness in the US. One was the documnetary series, Jenks and the other was, “True Life, I’m Homeless” – I think.

  39. mrs.d,
thank you for the clarification on that. I didn’t get to start it because my topic wasn’t posted yet. Is there one you would recommend if not, i will just choose one!

  40. Hi Danielle, The project is about YOUR Topic for each flap. Each flap has a question or prompt that you must answer regarding YOUR TOPIC only. For example, under the State of Nature flap, the question asks you about your topic, homelessness. You only have to have 1 Flap due by Monday. The rest we will complete in class. Which flap did you start in class? Finish that one for homework.

  41. hi mrs d,
I don’t really understand this project. I am doing homelessness for my project. But for example there is section that says why does your society need a wakeup call. Do you mean why they need a wakeup call for the homeless or just in general? Also do we just do one block on the packet and answer on foldable? Lastly for state of nature are you saying that if there were no rules or laws about your issue what would happen or just your society as a whole? (:

  42. Hi Haley,
Check out Bob Barker or Dr. Barnard or Daniella Monet. I added 2 more websites for your topic. Both organizations have been around for many years. You can also use the search engines that I included under Social Studies research. Let me know how you do. 🙂

  43. Hi Ms. D! I’m doing my project on animal testing, and I can’t find a model of civic virtue. I even looked on Google and Bing, though I would not get credit for the source. In the morning, you told me to come by later, but I guess it slipped from my mind. By any chance, did you find someone?

  44. Hi Mrs. DiGangi,
I looked up the picture of the little girl and the vulture that you showed us in class today. The picture was taken by a journalist named Kevin Carter. He and a fellow journalist were in Sudan when he took the picture. The little girl, who let out a high-pitched squeal that caught his attention, was trying to crawl to a feeding center nearby. It was said that Carter stayed there for 20 minutes to wait for the vulture to spread its wings, but it did not and he snapped the picture anyway. Afterward, he chased the vulture away and left the girl to die. Nobody knows what happened to the girl after Carter took the picture. He won the “Pulitzer Prize” in 1994 for his picture. Three months later, he committed suicide because of the depression and guilt that the picture gave him.

Also, what is the movie trailer maker app called that we used in class?
